pcori-logoThe Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) Places Special Emphasis on The Importance of Physical Therapy

The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) is an independently-owned, nonprofit-based organization that was officially authorized by Congress in the year of 2010. Since its induction, PCORI has placed a large amount of attention on the role that physical therapy plays in the outcomes of patients suffering from various health-related complications.
In the summer of 2015, the organization awarded a whopping $28 million to support research-based efforts by physical therapists. In 2016, an announcement was made that another $12.5 million would be awarded to a project that focuses on the overall effectiveness of integrative pain management.
Now, the organization has announced that it will award approximately $15,000 to provide funding to the project, “As a Matter of Pain” – once again, placing its focus on the positive role of physical therapists.

What is “As a Matter of Pain” All About?

“As a Matter of Pain” is a project with a special focus on building the community and the overall capacity to dramatically improve the experiences that a patient suffering from musculoskeletal pain with the healthcare system. The specific emphasis is on the role that the physical therapy team plays in the outcome of the patient as well as identifying the processes of care that are considered to be of vital importance to stakeholders. It is a known fact that musculoskeletal pain is extremely common, yet, quite unique to each patient that suffers with the condition. This type of pain provides burdens to the patients that experience it, their loved ones, as well as to society. Three main aspects of this project are said to have the potential for future research-based proposals:
1. The project hopes to uncover strategies that will improve communication levels between patients suffering from musculoskeletal pain and the clinicians that care for them, immediately following their discharge from a medical facility, institution, and/or basic regular care.
2. The project hopes to integrate the consideration of the expectations of each patient, as well as their personal preferences associated with their care.
3. Finally, the project anticipates being able to successfully integrate a timely access to solid and value-based healthcare for each patient.
PCORI is offering the $15,000 research reward because they support the process of building the community and the unique ability to improve the lives of the patients that are suffering from musculoskeletal pain. The specific emphasis is being placed on the role of those that specialize in physical therapy in treating patients with this type of pain.
It is believed that the project will improve the process associated with posttreatment tracking, the ability to work with patients in terms of their expectations and preferences, and ensure that each patient has the ability to have access to the absolute best care possible for their individual needs.
In addition to this, the organization has also announced the appointment of Nancy White, PT, DPT, to the advisory panel that oversees the assessment of prevention, the official diagnosis process, and the treatment options for patients.
